What is a Koolacube cold room?

Koolacube cold rooms are fully self-contained, skid-mounted refrigeration units. Unlike a traditional walk-in cold room that's built into a building, ours sit on a steel skid base, which means the entire unit — insulated panels, refrigeration system, and flooring — can be lifted and moved as one piece. This makes them ideal for sites that need cold storage now but may need to relocate, scale up, or scale down later.

What's the difference between a skid-mounted cold room and a permanent walk-in?

A permanent walk-in is constructed on site and generally stays there for good. A Koolacube skid-mounted unit arrives pre-built and ready to run, and because it's designed as a single transportable module, it can be picked up and moved to a new site if your business relocates or your storage needs change — without the cost and disruption of demolishing and rebuilding cold storage from scratch.

Do you sell cold rooms, or only hire them out?

Both. We sell cold rooms outright for businesses that want a permanent solution, and we also offer them on a long-term hire basis for businesses that want flexibility without the upfront capital cost.

What's the minimum hire period?

Our cold rooms are available for long-term hire only, with a minimum term of 12 months. We don't offer short-term or casual hire. This reflects the nature of the equipment — skid-mounted cold rooms involve real delivery, site preparation, and (in some cases) craning costs, so they're best suited to businesses with an ongoing storage need rather than a one-off or seasonal job.

Why don't you offer short-term hire?

Because of the logistics involved in delivering and installing a skid-mounted unit — transport, site prep, and potentially crane access — short-term hire isn't cost-effective for either side. Long-term hire lets us offer competitive rates because the cost of delivery and installation is spread over a meaningful period.

Can I extend my hire agreement, or switch from hire to purchase?

Yes. Many of our hire customers extend their term when it comes up for renewal, and we're happy to discuss converting a hire agreement into a purchase if your circumstances change. Get in touch ahead of your renewal date and we'll talk through the options.

What happens at the end of my hire term?

You can extend the hire, arrange to purchase the unit, or have it collected and returned to us. We'll be in touch before your term ends to confirm what you'd like to do.

What's included in the hire price?

Hire fees cover the unit itself and routine servicing within 50kms of our depot. Delivery, site preparation, craning (where required), and power connection are quoted separately based on your site

How are the cold rooms delivered?

Cold rooms are delivered by tilt tray truck. The truck tilts its bed to slide the unit directly onto a prepared, level surface at your site, which keeps delivery quick and straightforward where there's good access.

Will my cold room need to be craned in?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your site. Tilt tray delivery works well where there's clear, level access for the truck to get close to the final position. If your site has restricted access, isn't at ground level, or doesn't allow the truck to reach the placement point directly, the unit will need to be craned into position instead. We'll assess this as part of your quote and let you know which method applies to your site.

What does a site need for tilt tray delivery?

Generally, a clear and level run for the truck right up to where the cold room will sit, with enough overhead and side clearance for the truck to tilt and slide the unit off safely. We'll confirm exact access requirements once we know your site layout.

Do I need to prepare the site before delivery?

Yes — the cold room needs a level, stable surface (such as a concrete pad or compacted hardstand) rated to support its weight. We'll provide site preparation guidelines once your order is confirmed, and our team can advise on what's needed for your specific location.

What power supply does a Koolacube cold room need?

Units typically require a three-phase power connection. We'll confirm exact requirements for your unit size when you receive your quote.

Who looks after maintenance and servicing during the hire period?

Accepted Answer

For locations withing 50km of our deport, we handle scheduled servicing and breakdown support for the life of your hire agreement, so you're never managing refrigeration maintenance yourself. A quote will be provided for sites outside the service area.

Can the cold room be moved again once it's installed?

Yes — that's the advantage of a skid-mounted design. If your business relocates or you need the unit repositioned, it can be picked up by tilt tray truck (or craned, depending on access) and moved to a new site. Get in touch to arrange a relocation.
